Can a timing belt fail without causing damage to the head on an interference motor?

i have 92 prelude with an h22a motor in it that i bought from a friend. He was driving around one day when the motor died on him . we got it back to the house and we saw that the timing belt was half gone .what remianed of the belt was still holding together pretty well . I cant tell if it jumped timing . but uming it did .is it possible for that the valves didnt get damaged ?
